Saint Agatha was martyred in Sicily during the persecution of Emperor Decius in 251. Agatha was arrested for being a Christian, tortured, and sent to a house of prostitution. She was preserved from being violated, and was later put to death. Agatha often is portrayed carrying her amputated breasts on a platter because, according to a thirteenth century legend, Agatha rejected the amorous advances of the Roman prefect Quintianus who then had her breasts removed as retribution.
