Another way we can honor and draw nearer to the Blessed Virgin Mary is by wearing the brown scapular, which has been approved by the Church for more than seven centuries. Many Catholics wear a scapular as a way to signify their love and commitment to the Blessed Mother and through her to our Lord Jesus Christ. The scapular is not a lucky charm nor is it an automatic guarantee of salvation, more accurately it stands for a commitment to follow Jesus, like Mary, the perfect model of all the disciples of Christ. This commitment finds its origin in baptism by which we become children of God. It is a sign of our salvation if we draw close to the Mother of God, open our hearts to the special heavenly graces that she offers, and give ourselves to her protection from earthly sin and temptation.
