Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

The truth behind the tradition of bearing palms today goes to the story of Palm Sunday, when the people heard that Christ was coming and “they took out palm branches and went out to meet him and cried out ‘Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, [even] the king of Israel.’” (John 12:13). It was a tradition to spread palms before a king as he processed into his city. It was a way to welcome him, to show him glory and homage. Thus, Christ, the true King, was welcomed into Jerusalem.

La verdad detrás de la presente tradición de llevar hojas de palmeras, se remonta a la historia del Domingo de Ramos, cuando la gente escuchó que Cristo iba a llegar y, “tomando hojas de palmeras, salieron a su encuentro y lo aclamaban diciendo: ‘¡Hosanna!, Bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor [y] rey de Israel”. (Jn 12:13). La tradición era recibir con hojas de palmeras al rey cuando éste ingresaba a su ciudad. Era una manera de darle la bienvenida y de mostrarle gloria y homenaje. Así, Cristo, el Rey verdadero, fue recibido en Jerusalén.
